When people say their SASSA status check failed, they mean a lot of different screens: “no record found”, a page that spins and never answers, a timeout, an error message. The wording on the portal can differ from our description, and your screens may look slightly different. What they share is that no card for any month appeared. This guide sorts the causes from the most likely to the least, then gives you an order to test them in.
What “status check failed” means in practice
The status page does one thing. It takes an ID number and a cellphone number and looks for an application that has both. If they match, you get a card for each month. If they do not, or if the portal cannot finish the lookup, you get a failure instead.
So a failed check is not a verdict on your application. Declined is a result for one month, and it appears on a card. A failure means no card appeared at all. If a card did appear and the word on it worries you, see our guide to what each SRD status means.
The usual causes
A typo in the ID number
The ID number has 13 digits and no spaces. One wrong digit points at a different record or at none. Check each digit against your ID document, not against memory or a message you typed earlier. The counter on the status page shows how many digits you have entered.
A typo in the phone number
The phone number has 10 digits, and the page counts them too. A swapped pair of digits is the classic mistake, so read the number back from the handset it belongs to.
A different number from the application
The check matches the number on your application. A new SIM, an old number you no longer use, or a relative’s phone that helped you apply will all fail. Think back to which phone received the SMS PIN when you applied. We have not confirmed which number the page matches after a change on the portal, so try the number you applied with first and the new one second.
No application on file
The booklet says the date of application is the day a complete online application is successfully submitted. If you stopped before the last screen, or applied on a look-alike site, SASSA’s system holds nothing for you. A finished application ends with an application ID on screen. If you never saw one, that is a clue.
A cancelled application
The SRD home page has a cancel application option. If the application was cancelled, by you or by someone using your details, the page cannot show an active result. Read cancelling an SRD application if you are not sure what happened.
The portal is busy or has a technical error
Say it plainly: the portal can be slow, and it can time out when many people check at once. We know of no official list of busy times, so we cannot tell you when it will be quiet. A spinning page or a message that tells you to try again later is about the portal, not about you.
You are on the wrong website
Fake sites copy SASSA’s look, and SAnews named two on 26 February 2025: srd-sassa.org.za and srdsassagov.co.za. A fake page can invent an “error” so that you type in more details. The real status page is srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status, and you should type it yourself.
A short troubleshooting table
| What you see | Most likely cause | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| “No record found” at the first attempt | A typo in the ID or phone number | Retype both slowly and compare with your documents |
| “No record found” after you changed number | The number differs from your application | Try the number you applied with first |
| A spinning page, a timeout or “try again later” | The portal is busy | Wait, change network and try once later |
| A card that says cancelled | The application was closed | Call SASSA to confirm before you do anything else |
| You never saw an application ID | The application may not have been completed | Ask SASSA before you reapply |
| A page asking for a PIN or card details | Not the official status page | Close it and retype the address |
| Everything is right and it still fails | We cannot tell from outside | Call 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office |
The order to troubleshoot in
- Type srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status into the address bar yourself.
- Retype the ID number slowly. The counter should reach 13.
- Retype the phone number. The counter should reach 10.
- Ask yourself whether that phone is the one you applied with. Check old SMS messages from the application to see which handset got the PIN.
- Change network, from Wi-Fi to mobile data or back, close the tab and try once more after a while.
- Use a second route for comparison, such as the WhatsApp chatbot. The hub guide on every way to check your SRD status compares them.
- If it still fails, phone or visit, as set out below.
When to reapply, and when not to
A new application is the right move only if SASSA confirms that no application is on file for you. It is the wrong move when the portal was slow, when you mistyped, or when a check failed for any of the reasons above. The booklet counts the date of application from the day a complete application is successfully submitted, so a fresh application should carry its own date rather than your original one. There is also no paper route, because the booklet says SRD is accessed through online channels only.
A failed check is not a declined month either, so an appeal is not the route for it. Our reapplication guide explains when a new application is needed, and the SRD application guide covers how to do it safely.
When to call 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office
Call or go in when you have worked through the list and the check still fails, when the card says cancelled and you did not cancel it, or when you have lost the phone you applied with. If you think someone used your ID, report it on the anti-fraud line, 0800 701 701.
Have this ready before you call:
- Your ID number and the phone number you believe you applied with.
- The application ID, if you saved it, and the approximate date you applied.
- A screenshot or a note of exactly what the page showed, with the date and time.
The call centre is toll-free and runs in weekday working hours, so confirm the times on sassa.gov.za. Write down the date, the time, the agent’s name and any reference number. For an office, bring your original ID and use the directory on sassa.gov.za, or our guide to SASSA offices near you. Other verified contacts are in the SASSA contact numbers guide.
