How the news section works

Every item here, and every post in the archive, carries a date, names its source, says what changed and says what you should do about it. If an item cannot pass those four tests, it does not run.

We write from SASSA publications, Department of Social Development notices, gov.za statements and SAnews, the government’s news agency, and we put the facts in our own words. When something is only being discussed, we label it that way. If we get a fact wrong, the corrections and updates page records the fix, and our editorial policy explains how we check. New posts also appear in the site’s RSS feed at /rss.xml.

Good to know. This site is independent. We are not SASSA and we are not a government website.

What is confirmed and what is only discussed

Most SRD news comes back to one worry: will the payments stop? The sources we have checked support two firm statements and one open question.

  • Confirmed: SRD pays R370 a month and is funded to 31 March 2027. The February 2026 Budget Review set aside the extra R36.4 billion.
  • Confirmed: on 15 January 2026 the Department of Social Development called claims of an early end false.
  • Reported, not confirmed: on 21 October 2026 GroundUp and The Witness reported that the mid-term budget extends SRD for another year, with no end date or amount. We could not find it in the Treasury speech text. EWN, on 22 October, reported instead that the Minister made no pronouncement and that budget documents indicate the extension.
  • Discussed, not decided: a permanent replacement, such as basic income support, has been discussed. No design, amount or start date has been confirmed, so we do not print one.

Treat any post that names a date or an amount for a new grant as unconfirmed until you find it on an official channel. The full breakdown, with a timeline, is in Will the SRD grant end in March 2027?

Payment dates: one page for each month

Payment dates are the most searched part of SASSA news, and they can change. We keep one page for each month so every date has a single home. The table shows the two months around the election change.

MonthOlder personsDisabilityChildren’s grants
November 2026 Revised Friday 30 October Monday 2 November Tuesday 3 November
December 2026 2 December 3 December 4 December

Dates are paid on or after the day shown, and a weekend or public holiday moves a payment to the next working day.

For the whole year, see SASSA payment dates and the 2026/27 payment schedule. The main-grant months have their own pages: November 2026 and December 2026. SRD has no fixed published calendar, so our SRD payment dates page labels what is estimated and what is not published.

Go to these directly. Type the address or handle yourself instead of tapping a forwarded link.

  • sassa.gov.za: SASSA’s main website, with its notices and the office directory.
  • sanews.gov.za: SAnews, the South African Government News Agency.
  • dsd.gov.za: the Department of Social Development, which published the 2026/27 payment schedule.
  • SASSA’s social channels in the 2026 booklet: X @OfficialSASSA, Instagram official_sassa, YouTube @SASSATV and a WhatsApp channel.

Accounts with extra words or digits in the name are look-alikes until proven otherwise. If a message invites you to join a “SASSA” WhatsApp group or channel, check it against what sassa.gov.za says first. SASSA’s WhatsApp chatbot is a service line, not a news channel, and our SASSA WhatsApp number page shows which number the 2026 booklet gives. This site is not an official channel either.

How to spot a fake news post about grants

Rumours often spread around pay days and Budget time. Before you share a post, ask:

  1. Does it name a source you can open? “Sources say” is not a source. Look for sassa.gov.za, SAnews or a Department of Social Development notice.
  2. Does it show a date? Old news is often shared as new. The date on the original must match the claim.
  3. Does it give an amount or date for a replacement grant? As of 25 October 2026 none has been confirmed.
  4. Does it push you to act today? Countdowns and “register now” lines are a warning sign.
  5. Does it ask for money, a PIN or an OTP? Never share your PIN or OTP, and never pay anyone to apply, check or speed up a grant. The SRD application and status check are free on the official portal.
  6. Is it only a screenshot? A screenshot of an announcement is not an announcement.
Safety note. Scammers use big news. SAnews named two fake SRD application sites in February 2025. If you have clicked, paid or shared details, read how to report an SRD scam, and phone the anti-fraud line on 0800 701 701. Our official links and scam warning page lists the real addresses.
