A SASSA appeal status check is a different job from the ordinary SRD status check. The first looks for the outcome of an appeal you lodged. The second shows one card for each month. This guide shows where to look for an appeal result, what the common outcomes mean, and what to do after each one, including what to do if you have lost your reference number.
How do you check your appeal outcome?
This is how the appeal pages work in our June 2026 screenshots. Your screens may look slightly different.
- Open the SRD home page. Type srd.sassa.gov.za into your browser yourself, scroll to the “Lodging an appeal” box and open the “DSD appeals website” link.
- Enter the same details you used to appeal. Type the ID number and the phone number on your application, then press “send pin”.
- Type the 6-digit PIN when the SMS arrives, and submit it.
- Find the month you appealed and read what the page says about it.
You will see two addresses for appeals in official material: srd.sassa.gov.za/appeals in our screenshots and srd.dsd.gov.za in SASSA’s 2026 booklet. Both are on the official list. The “Lodging an appeal” box is the safest way to reach either.
We captured the appeal pages up to the point of applying. We have not captured an outcome screen, so we cannot show you one, and we cannot promise where your result appears or which words it uses. If you cannot find it, the call centre can tell you what to look for. If the PIN never arrives, see OTP and PIN problems. If the registered number is no longer yours, change your SRD phone number first.
Look at the month’s status card too
SRD is reassessed every month, and the status page shows each month as its own card, with a pay day for approved months. We have not confirmed how or when an appeal result is reflected there, but the card for the appealed month is worth checking alongside the appeal pages. Our guide to every way to check your SRD status lists the options.
What are the common appeal outcomes?
SASSA does not publish an official list of appeal outcome wordings, so the words on your screen may differ. These are the outcomes readers report, not an official list.
| Outcome | What it usually means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Successful | The decline for that month was reversed | Check the month’s status card and your banking details, keep a screenshot, watch your bank statement |
| Unsuccessful | SASSA kept the decline | Read the reason, compare it with your proof and decide whether you have new proof |
| Still being reviewed | No decision yet | Do not file again, keep your reference and plan the wait |
| No record or an error message | A mismatch in what you typed, or a portal problem | Check the ID and phone number, try later, then call the call centre |
If your appeal is successful
Take a screenshot straight away. Check the status card for that month and make sure your banking details are correct, because a month cannot be paid into an account that does not work. Our guide to changing your banking details covers it. SASSA publishes no timing for payment after a successful appeal, so watch your own bank statement for the arrival date rather than assuming one.
Do not leave a successful result sitting. SASSA’s booklet lists a grant going unclaimed for too long after approval as a reason it can lapse. The booklet is written for social grants, so ask SASSA how that applies to SRD months.
If your appeal is unsuccessful
Read the reason carefully before you do anything else. Ask yourself three questions:
- Did my proof answer the reason I was given?
- Did I pick an appeal reason that matched my real situation?
- Is the reason one I cannot change, for example because I receive another grant for myself?
If the answer to the first two is no, new or better proof may change things. If the reason is one you cannot change, an appeal is unlikely to succeed. The portal rule is one appeal for each declined month, so ask the call centre on 0800 60 10 11 what can still be done for that month. SRD is reassessed every month, so a later month may come out differently without any appeal. Check each month’s card.
For a walkthrough by decline reason, see how to appeal an SRD decision. If you have seen the word “reconsideration”, read SASSA reconsideration vs appeal.
If your appeal is still being reviewed
Wait, and do not file the same appeal again. A second filing does not move you up any queue. Keep your reference and your screenshots, and check at sensible intervals, no more than once a day. Our guide to how long an SRD appeal takes explains what is known, what is not and when to follow up.
What if you cannot find your reference number?
The reference we know about is your application ID, which the portal shows after you submit your SRD application. If you saved a separate reference when you appealed, use that. If neither is to hand:
- Search your phone. Look through screenshots, photos, notes and your SMS inbox for the application ID and for anything saved when you pressed apply.
- Call the call centre on 0800 60 10 11. Have your ID number ready. SASSA may ask questions to confirm it is really you, and it can help once it has done so. The line keeps weekday working hours, so confirm on sassa.gov.za.
- Email [email protected] and describe the month you appealed. Do not put a PIN, an OTP or card details in the email.
- Do not post it anywhere. Never share a reference number on social media or in a group chat, and never give it to an “agent”.
From now on, screenshot every step of any online process and keep one note with the date, the month and the reference. Our SASSA contact numbers page lists every verified channel.
When should you try again with new proof?
Try again only when you have something new to say. Good reasons include:
- You now hold a document that answers the reason SASSA gave, such as a letter from UIF, your institution or Home Affairs.
- A different declined month has its own grounds and needs its own appeal.
- Your situation changed, and a later month’s reassessment may reflect it.
Do not try again with the same facts and the same proof. We do not know whether SASSA allows a second appeal for the same month, and the portal rule we captured is one appeal for each declined month. If your application has expired or been cancelled, you need a new application, not an appeal. See SRD reapplication.
