A “SASSA reconsideration” and an SRD appeal sound alike, and the SRD portal lists both, but they are not the same thing. This page keeps to what SASSA’s own pages show, says plainly where those pages go quiet and tells you what to do when you see a “reconsideration” or “pending” message.
What does the SRD portal actually say?
These are the facts we can stand behind:
- The SRD home page lists “reconsideration status”. It appears among the other links: apply, application status, e-KYC, change mobile number, lodging an appeal, change banking details, names or surname update and cancel application.
- In our June 2026 screenshots, the reconsideration page said reconsideration was closed for May 2020 to March 2022.
- The appeal is the live route for a declined month. It sits in the “Lodging an appeal” box. You enter your ID number and phone number, ask for a PIN, type it, pick the declined month, pick the reasons and press apply. It is one appeal for each declined month.
- You have a right to appeal. SASSA Mpumalanga said on 27 January 2026 that a declined applicant has the right to appeal.
Portal screens change, so your screens may look slightly different.
What is the difference between reconsideration and appeal?
In everyday terms, a reconsideration asks the decision-makers to look at the same case again, while an appeal asks for the decision to be challenged through the appeal route. SASSA’s pages do not spell out every step, so confirm with the call centre before you rely on our plain-language summary.
| Detail | Reconsideration | Appeal |
|---|---|---|
| In plain terms | A second look at a decision | A challenge to a declined month |
| What the SRD page shows | A “reconsideration status” link, which said reconsideration was closed for May 2020 to March 2022 | A “Lodging an appeal” box with a PIN-protected form |
| Who it is for | SASSA’s pages do not say beyond the closed period | A declined applicant, one appeal for each declined month |
| Is it open? | Closed for the months named on the page | The live route in our screenshots |
| What to do | Ask the call centre | Follow our SRD appeal guide |
You will meet guides that describe reconsideration as a step that must come before an appeal. In the SASSA pages we captured in June 2026 we saw no instruction to do it first. If the portal itself asks you to request a reconsideration, follow what the portal says. If it does not, there is no reason on the pages we saw to wait.
What should you do if you see “reconsideration status” or “pending”?
If you open the reconsideration status link
Read what the page says. In June 2026 it said reconsideration was closed for May 2020 to March 2022. If your case involves one of those months, call 0800 60 10 11 and ask what is possible. We do not know whether anything can still be done for months that old, and we will not guess. Do not type your details into a reconsideration page that you reached from a message.
If your status card says pending
“Pending” on a monthly status card is the ordinary status: SASSA’s checks are still running. It is not a reconsideration, and there is nothing to appeal yet, because an appeal is for a declined month. SASSA publishes no official time for pending. As practical advice, not an official figure, wait about a week, then check again. Do not reapply. Our guide to SRD status meanings explains the word, and you can pick it in the status decoder.
If a message or website says “reconsideration pending” or “reconsideration approved”
SASSA publishes no list of the exact wording the portal uses. A phrase in a message, an advert or a social media post is not proof of anything. Do not tap its link. Open srd.sassa.gov.za yourself, check your status there and, if you are still unsure, call the call centre.
Which route fits your situation?
- A recent month was declined and you disagree: appeal. See how to appeal an SRD decision for a walkthrough by decline reason.
- You already appealed: check the outcome with our SRD appeal status check guide and plan the wait with how long an appeal takes.
- A month shows pending: wait and check again. Nothing needs filing.
- The portal says your application has expired or been cancelled: you need a new application. See SRD reapplication.
- The portal asks you to confirm or update your details: do it on the official portal. See SRD reconfirmation.
- Your declined month falls between May 2020 and March 2022: call the call centre, because the reconsideration page said it was closed for those months.
- The problem is a bank or identity mismatch: an appeal is the wrong tool. See bank verification failed or identity verification failed.
What should you ask SASSA?
If your case does not fit neatly, ask the call centre on 0800 60 10 11. It keeps weekday working hours, so confirm on sassa.gov.za. You can also email [email protected] with your application ID and a screenshot, never with a PIN, an OTP or card details. Useful questions are:
- Is a reconsideration open for my declined month?
- Do I have to request one before I appeal?
- Can I appeal while a reconsideration is pending?
- Which reference should I keep for each?
Write down the date, the time and the name of the person you spoke to. Our SASSA contact numbers page lists every verified channel.
