People who search for the “SASSA status check appeal date” are usually hoping for a date: the day the decision will arrive. There is no such date. SASSA publishes no official decision time for an SRD appeal, and we saw no decision date on the appeal pages we captured in June 2026. This guide explains what is and is not known, what affects the wait, what to do while you wait and when to follow up.
Is there an official time for an SRD appeal decision?
No. SASSA has not published one. Some third-party sites mention up to about 90 days. SASSA’s own pages do not state that, so confirm it with SASSA before you rely on it. Treat the figure as a worst-case planning number, not a promise. Your decision may come sooner or later.
Which “90 days” are people talking about?
Three different time limits get mixed up. They are not the same thing.
| What people call “90 days” | Where it comes from | How to treat it |
|---|---|---|
| The time you have to lodge an appeal | Third-party sites quote it. SASSA’s own pages do not state it in this form | Appeal early and confirm with SASSA. The deadline calculator is on our SRD appeal guide |
| The time SASSA takes to decide | Third-party reports of up to about 90 days. No SASSA figure | Plan for a wait. Do not treat it as a promise |
| Claiming a grant after approval | SASSA’s 2026 booklet lists “not claimed within 90 days of approval” as a reason a grant can lapse | The booklet is written for social grants, so confirm with SASSA how it applies to SRD months |
Is the date on your status card the appeal date?
No, and this is the most common mix-up. The status cards we captured show a pay day for approved months and the day the application was filed. Neither is the date an appeal will be decided. In the cards we captured, a pay day was shown for approved months, so do not look for one on a declined month, and do not expect an appeal to produce one unless the month ends up approved. SASSA also publishes no fixed SRD pay date, so any window you see quoted for a month is an estimate until your own card shows your pay day. Our guide to SRD payment dates explains how to read it.
What affects how long an appeal takes?
SASSA does not publish what drives the timing, so none of the points below is confirmed by SASSA. They are the factors we can reasonably point to, and several are in your hands.
- How clear your case is. A decline caused by a simple data mismatch may be easier to check than one that needs records looked up. We cannot tell from outside which yours is.
- Whether you appealed the right month with the right reason. An appeal that does not match the record gives SASSA less to work with.
- Whether your details are right. A working phone number and correct banking details mean SASSA can reach you and pay you if the appeal succeeds.
- How many appeals SASSA is handling. SASSA publishes no workload figures, so we cannot say how this affects the wait.
- The monthly reassessment. SRD is reassessed every month, so a later month can come out differently from the declined one, whatever happens to your appeal.
What should you do while you wait?
- Keep your reference and screenshots together. Note the month you appealed, the date you lodged and the reference.
- Check the outcome at a steady pace. Use the appeals pages as described in our SRD appeal status check guide. Once a day at most is plenty.
- Do not file the same appeal twice. The portal allows one appeal for each declined month, and a second one gains nothing.
- Keep your proof safe and ready. SASSA or the call centre may ask for it.
- Keep your phone working and your account open. A lost SIM or a closed account can undo a good result.
- Look at each month’s status card. Later months may be approved without any appeal.
- Ignore agents and “fast” services. There are none.
A simple waiting log
You do not need a tool for this. Write these lines in a notes app and update them each time you check:
- The month you appealed.
- The date you lodged the appeal.
- Your reference.
- The date of each check, and what you saw.
- The date you decide to follow up.
If you want to know how long you have left to lodge an appeal in the first place, use the deadline calculator on our SRD appeal guide. It works out the last day to lodge, not the time SASSA takes to decide, so we do not repeat it here.
When and how should you follow up?
SASSA gives no official trigger for a follow-up. The advice below is practical, not an official rule.
- If a few weeks pass with no change, a polite call or email is reasonable.
- If the wait goes past the third-party figure of about 90 days, follow up firmly and ask what the next step is. That figure is not from SASSA.
- If your situation is urgent, say so at the start of the call.
To follow up:
- Call the call centre on 0800 60 10 11. It keeps weekday working hours, so confirm on sassa.gov.za. Have your ID number, your application ID, the month you appealed, the date you lodged and a screenshot to hand. Write down the date, the time, the name of the person and any reference they give you.
- Email [email protected]. Put your application ID, the month, the date you lodged and a screenshot in the email. Never put a PIN, an OTP or card details in it.
- Visit a SASSA office if you cannot get through. Bring your original ID. Our SASSA offices near me directory lists the offices, and our SASSA contact numbers page lists every verified channel.
What happens once there is an outcome?
Our guide to the SRD appeal status check explains the common outcomes and what to do after each one. If the appeal succeeds, check your banking details, then watch your own bank statement, because SASSA publishes no timing for payment after a successful appeal. Once a month is approved, your own pay day appears on its status card. If the money does not arrive, read approved but no payment. If the appeal fails, go back to the SRD appeal guide for proof and wording, or read SASSA reconsideration vs appeal if you are unsure which route applies.
